Discovery Networks Asia is collaborating with mobile phone giant Nokia on an initiative designed to stimulate the growth of mobile film-making throughout the region.
In the latest example of a broadcaster cosying up to the mobile telecommunications industry, the Mobile First Time Filmmakers Contest 2005 will offer a grand prize of $10,000 to the winner.
While not only intended to encourage creativity and see the extent to which TV and mobile can work in harmony, the initiative is also a marketing exercise to push Nokia's N90 camera phone.
Similar promotions around the world have included a Sony Ericsson collaboration in the UK with Magnum photographer Martin Parr, again designed to engage mobile phone users, but also to foster creativity.
The Discovery/Nokia scheme does, however, have a particular focus on mobile video, giving people an opportunity to show off their documentary-making skills, as well as allowing Nokia to showcase the new handset.
Discovery Networks Asia's svp of programming and creative services, James Gibbons said the initiative would create "a new genre that will empower aspiring documentarians to bring their real-world stories to light."
"With this initiative, we hope to inspire a new generation of talent by changing the way documentary filmmaking is perceived and taking this new genre to greater heights," he added.
"Not only will the initiative help develop the amateur filmmaking industry in the region, it will also revolutionize filmmaking by giving consumers the ability to create their own personal documentaries,?added Pasi Jarvenpaa, director of mobile phones marketing at Nokia Asia Pacific.
